Brief Description: Grasshopper offers nationwide toll free service, including Canada but not off shore US territories without additional fees (up to 15 cents per minute).

While you will own your toll free number, expect to pay an activation fee of $25.00 to start, and an additional $30.00 for a vanity number (selection is limited). If you search a vanity number using their database they will likely reserve the number for up to four weeks. They claim it’s so no one else takes your number but you will want to note that no other provider will have access to get you the number you searched should you decide against Grasshopper. 1-800 numbers are generally NOT offered as Grasshopper claims they are simply not available.

Monthly rental fee ranges from $12.95 – $199.95 (note that their website rounds down but charges the full amount).

The $12.95 per month plan offers no minutes and costs 6 cents for each minute used, he $24.95 plan includes 500 minutes, the $49.95 plan includes 2000 minutes and the $199.95 plan offers 10000 minutes.

Taxes are not included so be ready to pay up to $15.00 additional as well. The toll free number can ring anywhere and there are no contracts involved. Customer service is helpful.

Description of Company: Grasshoper, a Massachusetts-based toll free service company, was founded by two entrepreneurs, Siamak Taghaddos and David Hauser, in 2003. The founders’ original vision was to create a virtual phone system that could help entrepreneurs, and was originally known as GotVMail until officially changing its name to Grasshopper. To date, they have served more than 100,000 customers, by offering both toll free and local numbers for businesses and individuals. Unlike many other traditional telephone systems, Grasshopper’s virtual phone system is managed online and in the cloud. After signing up there is no need to purchase any hardware or to install additional software.

GotVMail (Grasshopper) has partnered with a variety of big names in the business world, including: Fed-Ex and the National Association of Realtors. They have also been featured in a number of notable publications, such as the Wall Street Journal, Businessweek, and Entrepreneur magazine. They offer a wide range of service plans and low activation fees for virtually all of their services.

PROS: Different packages of minutes offered. Helpful customer service reps. No contract terms. Ownership of the toll free number.

CONS: Lengthy terms of service (lots of restrictions). They will secure a toll free if you search it on their site, making it unable for you to get the number elsewhere. Moderate minute charges but higher cost package deals than other providers. 800 numbers not available. Vanity options are limited.
