“I never meant for selling Avon to be my ‘job’” says Jane as we ask in our phone interview how she got started with Avon. It turns out that she started off by buying her Mom a lotion as a stocking stuffer for Christmas one year and the woman she bought it from soon moved out of town and offered to give Jane her five or clients if she wanted to sign up as a rep. “I didn’t really want to but it was really no work involved. I wasn’t looking for a discount and didn’t intend to have people sign up under me or throw make-up parties.” But she wanted her Mom to be able to get these products that she loved so much and, she simply didn’t know anyone selling it. “They have restrictions on where you can advertise, you know, you can’t just build your own website and make a brand for yourself. You’re supposed to sell to friends and build a network of people below you, and then those people sign up other people and so on. That’s their business model.” With a few lazy Saturdays and friends with interested friends, she ultimately decided to throw a few ‘parties’. “It was just fun for me, decorating, having a few drinks and some girl talk since my household is my husband and three sons!” But people wanted to order through her and over three years or so she started to get people signing up under her – just like the business model intended. “It was crazy! It wasn’t all of a sudden or anything but after years of doing the bare minimum and then a little more and a little more, I was making enough to where I didn’t have to work my normal full time job. I got to spend more time at home with my family. I still work about 16 hours a week at my other job because I like getting out of the house” she says laughing.
And what about the toll free service? “My friend actually suggested it. She said to me, ‘You’re running a real business now, you need to stop giving people your home phone number!’ She was right, my kids would answer and women I didn’t know too well were uneasy about that. The boys are usually rough-housing and it doesn’t sound professional; to say the least.” She went on to explain that our call announce feature is perfect because if her kids answer now, they are prompted before the caller can hear them so they know to “Give the phone to me right away! Then I go to the den where I can take the call in peace.”
