One of the most common types of caller we get is from window-shoppers who have a hard time making up their mind. These are the people that go one of two ways: either they give up on getting a toll free number altogether or they do tons of research and then throw all of that work away and simply pick the company that pushes extra hard to make the sale, completely disregarding all of the other information they’ve gathered. This latter group are also the same people that end up calling us back a month or two down the road looking to transfer their toll free number. Last month I spoke to a man (let’s call him Jim) who had be researching toll free service for the better part of 2 weeks. I talked to Jim for a good 30-40 minutes, going over the information he’d gathered as well as filling him in with some features that he didn’t even know we offered. During this time I could hear Jim talking to someone in the background every so often. He would cover the phone and explain our pricing and our features to whomever he was speaking with, pointing out the advantages we had over the competitor. But ultimately the other person convinced Jim to think about it more. When I followed up with Jim a couple of days later I’d learned that his wife was tired of talking about it and just called one of the companies on his list to set it up, no further questions asked. Under pressure they’d instead gone with our competitor. Long story longer, I received a call from Jim not two days ago asking me to help him port his toll free number. Unfortunately the company he’d gone with would not release the number but I was able to find him an even better toll free and had it up and running within hours.

What can we learn from this story? First of all, trust your own judgment. We’re not saying that business-owners shouldn’t take the advice of spouses or family members, merely that the advice be taken with a grain of salt when it is uninformed. We understand the concern people having for saving money and getting the best deal possible but often the upfront cost is the least of your worries. When researching toll free service always remember to look into the costs of ownership versus renting as well as contract-based service versus month-to-month service. You’ll often find that you have to pay a little more up front for ownership but you’ll save hundreds (if not thousands) in monthly fees annually by simply paying a one-time cost to own the toll free. Jim knew this but he allowed himself to be seeded with doubt and ended up paying more in the end. But it’s not just Jim, these kind of stories happen almost every day. Don’t let it happen to you. Do your research. Compare long term vs small term benefits. Decide what works best and stand firm. As a business-owner it is your job to make the executive decisions.
