1866 service refers to toll free phone numbers with the area code 866. The 866 numbers were released by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission in 2000 to address a shortage of toll free 800, 888, and 877 numbers. 1-866 numbers work the same way as the other four toll free area codes and ownership can be obtained through phone companies and authorized toll free phone service providers.
