Women-owned Businesses Get a Boost

Hot on the heels of news that Wal-Mart will be carrying merchandise bearing the “Women Owned” label, several retailers have been in talks to do just the same, including the Macy’s department store chain. Skeptics have claimed that the Women Owned label is simply a marketing ploy, developed by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) to increase their profile and promote businesses that sell goods of no better quality than any other company. But while it’s true that the WBENC is an advocacy group for companies that pay membership fees, there’s no proof that they do not stand for the advancement of all female entrepreneurs.
It should be noted, however, that there are other organizations that are fighting the good fight as well. The non-profit Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC ) has been assisting women-owned businesses since 1986 and has grown from a small two-person operation into 15 women’s business assistance centers across the United States. And Annice Brown of the North Carolina Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) at Western Carolina University (SBTDC) was recently awarded the 2014 North Carolina Women Business Advocate of the Year award by the U.S. Small Businesses Administration (SBA). For many concerned consumers a label certifying a company is women-owned is a good start but there are so many female-owned businesses that don’t participate in programs like these that are just as deserving of attention and recognition. If you’d like to do your part to support women-owned businesses, take some time and research female-owned companies in your area. Or if you’re a woman looking to start her own business, visit the SBA’s Office of Women’s Business Ownership to see what time of assistance is available to help you get started up.
