Tollfreenumber.ORG Customer Spotlight: Printfast Technologies

Tammy Connors is the proud owner of Printfast Technologies in Boston, Massachusetts. She inherited the family business when her mother passed in 2004. Before that her mother Margaret had ran the family printing business alone (then known simply as Printfast) since the passing of her husband Jim in 1997. It wasn’t something Tammy had planned for but it had always been assumed she would eventually take over family business at some point. “I think most kids that grow up around certain businesses have no interest in doing the same thing their parents do”, Tammy told us. “But usually that’s where we all end up.” What Tammy had really wanted to do was write. “When I was at Wesleyan I took a couple of business classes but I found it hard to focus,” she says. “I always had my head in the clouds, dreaming up stories, poems, whatever I could think of.” She tried her hand at writing for a little while but after getting married in 1983 and then having 3 children over the course of the next few years she had trouble finding the time to focus on her work. “I love my children dearly but, my god, being a mother sapped all of my creativity,” she says with a laugh. “It’s not that being a mother is all that difficult, it’s just that ideas are fleeting and you don’t get a lot of quiet time to sit down when inspiration strikes.” After her father’s death, Tammy began helping her mother run the family business; infrequently at first but more often as the years went by. “My mother was getting older and having trouble handling everything on her own and since I was an only child it fell upon me to pick up the slack. Not that I minded. The kids were in high school by then and that freed up a lot of time for me. By the time they were away at college I was running the show almost single-handedly.”
In 2005 her son Richard graduated from Duke University and decided to get into the family business himself. “Richie always had a business-oriented mind,” Tammy confesses. “He’s a natural. So it made sense to have him come in to help. It’s sometimes hard letting someone else take the reins but it must be done.” The sharing of power gave Tammy the time to pursue writing for the first time in nearly two decades and let Richard get to modernizing a business on the decline. “We’re in the digital age,” Richard says, “and that means old-fashioned printing isn’t like it used to be. Sure we were still getting business but the times were changing, are changing still.” Richard convinced his mother to update the name to a hipper-sounding Printfast Technologies as well as to modernize their store, brand, and business methods. The change helped capture the interest of the youth market who utilize Printfast Technologies’ services to mass-produce flyers for the vibrant Boston music and club scenes. “We became Tollfreenumber.org customers after I had attended a seminar on marketing techniques during the summer of 2007,” says Richard. “One of the keynote speakers was talking about using a toll free number for marketing and something just clicked! Here I’d gone to business school and taken all these classes and somehow I’d forgotten all about this one simple tool. It was really the final piece we needed for our restart.” Both Tammy and Richard remarked on how well toll free service has worked for them. “I’m from the old school so to me a toll free number complete sense but I had no idea how to get one,” says Tammy. “That’s true. She did mention it beforehand,” Richard admits sheepishly, “but I didn’t really consider the benefits. I regret that now.” With the advent of 3D printing, Printfast Technologies has opened up their business to include an ever-expanding list of services. And business has been good. In fact, Tammy has just finished her second self-published novel and is planning a release for fall of this year. We imagine she probably saved a fortune on printing costs.
