Take a Break!

One of the biggest complaints we hear from small-business owners is that they never have time off. Their employees get days off and even vacations but they don’t have that luxury. Why? Truth be told, someone is holding them back: Themselves. Oftentimes small-business owners feel like if they go away for a while the whole business is going to fall apart without them. We get that. It’s like how a parent feels when their child drives alone for the first time. It’s scary at first but eventually you’ve got to hand the keys over and put your trust in them. The same goes for running a business. We’re sure there have been times when an emergency situation arose and you’ve had to leave a manager or assistant in charge; it happens. But it shouldn’t have to come to that. You’re under enough stress as it is and you need a break so here are some tips about letting go and relaxing.
- Any good entrepreneur knows that the key to running a successful business is delegating responsibility. You can’t do it all yourself so you need to put people in charge of certain tasks. You should have backup for emergencies, whether that be a manager, assistant-manager, department head, whatever and you should be grooming this person to handle the essentials in your absence. Because without someone who knows all of the ins and outs of your business, when something major happens (and it will) your business will suffer.
- Have faith in your employees and yourself. If you can’t trust your employees to handle business in your absence why trust them at all? In fact, why did you hire them in the first place? Clearly you saw their potential. You felt they’d be an asset to your company so let them be. If you’re concerned that there’s just too much for them to do without you, prepare for it. Get the major tasks done ahead of time so that no one will have to worry about them while you’re gone.
- Let go and enjoy yourself. That doesn’t mean you have to completely ignore your business. If checking up helps you relax, go for it! But don’t obsess over it. Set aside a small portion of your day to work on work-related business and once that’s done go have some fun. Whether you’re just taking a weekend stay-cation or going off to an exotic destination remember that you’ve earned the time off and enjoy yourself!
