If you’re starting a business or have an existing business you’ve probably been advised to get yourself on social media. If you’re a young entrepreneur you’re already akin to these types of websites but the older generation of business men and women may a little baffled to think that it’s worth their time. Even large corporations, household names, find themselves with a Facebook page and Twitter account at some point which begs the question, “Which social media outlets should you be using and how do you gain followers?”
Facebook: With one billion users worldwide and a free platform to create a page, you’d be greatly missing out on something by not having a Facebook page. Granted, there are A LOT of pages out there and any one can make one so, how does someone find yours? Like anyone with a social media page, you’ll want to customize it to your business, update daily, have funny and popular content. Tell people you know about your page, get involved in other pages by leaving comments, posing questions, and liking status’.
YouTube: One of Google’s major conquests with tons of users worldwide. Who needs to afford advertising on television when you can upload product videos, how-to’s, and your own charming ads to a free service. Same with Facebook, get involved by subscribing to similar users, commenting, and adding videos on a regular basis.
Twitter: Most popularly used by celebrities and large corporations (think media outlets, restaurants, retail, etc), but can still offer the new business owner a chance at a little extra bit of fame by following and commenting on the larger corporations pages as well as providing promotions and information about new products you are offering.
Tumblr: A large following but lesser known entity of the internet social media sites is Tumblr; a fun photo sharing site that, with the right content, will put you at the top of the search engines. Post photos and useful tags about your products, related services, specials, promotions, and anything that may ring the bell of your prospective clients.
All in all, you need social media sites to boost your business because they do it largely for free and can be a valuable asset to getting your name out there and boosting your brand. You want to use a variety of sites because, what one person may love, another person may loathe so you’ll get more of a range by including as many as humanly possible. Once you get used to your stash of social media outlets, you’ll be able to easily take an hour or less out of your day to share, comment, post, and like throughout all your pages. It’s worth it!
