Holiday Sales

The holiday season is upon us and many companies have decided to take another look at Thanksgiving Day sales. No, business hasn’t slowed and rendered sales unprofitable. Rather, many companies have looked to their employees and decided that the spirit of the holiday should afford time off to be with family and not just higher profit margins. In 2013 it was Nordstrom that led the charge but this year another crop of businesses are set to follow their lead. Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Marshalls, and Pier 1 are just a few of the two dozen or so retailers sitting this year out.
Some people are claiming that these companies aren’t closing out of the kindness of their hearts, speculating that they’re capitalizing on rising anti-consumerist sentiment around the holiday season. Regardless of their motives, we’ve sure that their employees will be awfully thankful this year. But for those looking forward to holiday sales, have no fear! Retailers like Kmart, Walmart, Macy’s, and Kohl’s aren’t only staying open on Thanksgiving but are starting their Black Friday sales even earlier than usual. So when other people are just sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner you can be off scoring that brand new big screen you’ve been eying since summer.
Many are taken aback by ‘the audacity’ of retailers that have been promoting such sales claiming that they are starting too soon. They claim that, beginning sales on Thanksgiving day, may be good for business but bad for values. To be open and have sales the day of Thanksgiving means taking their employees away from their families on a day they likely want to spend together. What about getting employees to volunteer? That’s all well and good but the whole idea of starting these holiday sales sooner and sooner in the year is getting a little ridiculous to many people. What’s next? Christmas sales beginning the day after Halloween?
